Rookie shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is killing the baseball for the Colorado Rockies

Rookie shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is making a late run at the Rookie of the Year Award in the National League with a very strong second half.  He has played in 36 games this season after the All-Star Break and he is 45 for 145 (.310 avg, .910 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 8 homers and 29 RBIs.  His strong 2nd half has spiked his season numbers in a positive direction.  He has now played in 118 games this season and he is 135 for 460 (.293 avg, .828 OPS) with 72 runs scored, 17 homers and 67 RBIs.

The Colorado Rockies sign Mark Redman to a minor-league contract

The Rockies have signed veteran lefty starting pitcher Mark Redman to a minor league contract.  This will be Redman’s 4th organization that he’s played for this season with the others being the Braves, Rangers and Blue Jays.  Redman was awful in the majors this season with the Braves as he was 0-4 with a 11.63 ERA and a 2.26 WHIP in six games (5 starts).  Redman has started 20 games in the minors this season and he is 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP.  He has worked 110.2 innings in the bush leagues and he has allowed 137 hits, walked 51 batters and whiffed 67.  This was a good signing by the Rockies for depth reasons.

The Colorado Rockies designate Alberto Arias for assignment

The Rockies have designated 23-year old righty Alberto Arias for assignment to make room on the roster for Franklin Morales.  The Rockies hope they can slide Arias through waivers and keep him around.  He pitched in 6 games for the Rockies this season and he was 0-0 with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP.  Morales was outstanding in his first start with the Rockies as he worked 5.1 innings and he allowed 5 hits, 1 earned run, whiffed 4 batters and walked 0.

The Colorado Rockies place Aaron Cook on the DL

The Rockies have placed righty starter Aaron Cook on the 15-day disabled list with a strained rib-cage muscle.  This will hurt the Rockies as Cook has been one of their best starters this season.  He has started 25 games this season for the Rockies and he is 8-7 with a 4.12 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.  He will be replaced in the rotation by Elmer Dessens.

The Colorado Rockies place Willy Taveras on the DL

The Rockies have placed center fielder Willy Taveras on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quad muscle.  Taveras is having a good season for the Rockies as he has played in 91 games this season and he is 108 for 347 (.311 avg, .735 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 2 homers, 22 RBIs and 29 stolen bases.  Taveras will be replaced in CF by Ryan Spilboroghs who is also having an outstanding season.  He has played in 60 games this season and he is 52 for 157 (.331 avg, .863 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 10 homer, 43 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.
