The Rockies have decided to give Brian Fuentes back his old job of closer. He probably should have never lost his job in the first place but Corpas pitched really well when Fuentes was on the D.L. last year. Corpas couldn’t keep the magic up this season however. In 11 games for the Rockies this season, Corpas was 0-1 with 4 saves, a 7.50 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. Fuentes has really outpitched Corpas pretty badly this season. In 13 games for the Rockies this year, Fuentes is 0-1 with 1 save, a 2.25 and a 1.08 WHIP. This was the right move at the right time by Rockies’ manager Clint Hurdle.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Sean Smith from the Indians

The Rockies have acquired 24-year old righty starting pitcher Sean Smith from the Cleveland Indians to complete the Jamey Carroll trade made during the off season. Smith started 4 games in AAA ball this season and he was 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. While Smith wasn’t one of the better prospects the Indians have he still has whiffed 20 batters in 18 innings this season. This was good value for Carroll.

Clint Barmes appears to have taken over the starting 2B job from rookie Jayson Nix. Barmes has played in 12 games for the Rockies this season and he is 16 for 40 (.400 avg, 1.079 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 1 homer, 8 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Barmes lost his starting job at shortstop to Troy Tulowitzki last season but he kept his head up. Rookie Jayson Nix was handed the starting job in spring training and he appears to already have lost it. Nix has played in 14 games this season for the Rockies and he is 5 for 38 (.132 avg, .408 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

The Rockies have placed lefty reliever Micah Bowie on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left forearm. Bowie has pitched in 10 games this season for the Rockies and he is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP. The Rockies have recalled 23-year old lefty Jeff Newman to replace Bowie as the second lefty in the bullpen. He has pitched in 7 games in AAA ball this season and he is 0-0 with 1 save, a 2.16 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP.

The Colorado Rockies place Luis Vizcaino on the D.L.

The Rockies have placed Luis Vizcaino on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain. Vizcaino hasn’t been right since spring training started so he might need more than 15 days to get back into action for the Rockies. The Rockies have recalled Ryan Speier from the minors. He never deserved to be banished to the minors in the first place so he might have a lengthy stay in the majors this time around.
