The Rockies have designated 24-year old righty Alberto Arias for assignment. He pitched pretty well for the Rockies earlier this season as he worked in 12 games (0 starts) in which he was 0-0 with a 2.63 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. Arias also pitched in 30 games (0 starts) in AAA this season and he was 3-4 with a 4.73 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Some team will want Arias so he won’t likely make it through waivers.

The Rockies have placed veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik on the 15-day disabled list with a broken hand. This injury comes at a back time for the surging Rockies who are making a move in the National League West. Podsednik has played in 75 games for the Rockies this season and he is 36 for 137 (.263 avg, .687 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 1 homer, 15 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. The Rockies have recalled Cory Sullivan from the minors to replace Podsednik. Sullivan has played in 83 games in AAA ball this season and he is 104 for 340 (.306 avg, .825 OPS) with 61 runs scored, 6 homers, 40 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. Sullivan also played in 9 games for the Rockies this season and he was 2 for 12 (.167 avg, .334 OPS) with 1 RBI. Sullivan has been a solid major league player when given a chance as he has played in 346 games in his career in the bigs and he is a .279 hitter with a .720 OPS. Sullivan will do a solid job for the Rockies but he doesn’t quite have the speed of Podsednik.
