25-year old switch hitting Jonathan Herrera has taken well to his new job as the Rockies’ starting 2B. He has played in 19 games this season for the Rockies and he is 18 of 59 (.305 avg, .633 OPS) with 7 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Herrera goes up to the plate hacking as he has only walked 2 times this season. The Rockies won’t care much about Herrera’s plate discipline as long as he keeps hitting the ball well and playing good defense. The Rockies are likely still looking to trade for a 2B or SS despite Herrera’s recent success.

The Rockies have activated 26-year old righty reliever Huston Street from the 15-day disabled list. He pitched in 9 games (2 starts) in AA+AAA-ball this year on a rehab assignment and he was 1-1 with a 8.64 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP. The Rockies will likely bring Street along slowly letting him work his way back to being the closer. Street pitched in 64 games (0 starts) for the Rockies in his first year with them in 2009 and he was 4-1 with 35 saves, a 3.06 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. The Rockies have DFA’d 31-year old righty reliever Juan Rincon to make room on the roster for Street. Rincon pitched in 2 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP. He pitched in 28 games (0 starts) in his two years with the Rockies and he was 3-2 with a 7.31 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP.

Seth Smith is swinging a good stick for the Colorado Rockies

27-year old lefty swinging Seth Smith is probably the best outfielder in baseball without a starting job. He has played in 59 games for the Rockies this season and he is 44 of 162 (.272 avg, .860 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 10 homers and 31 RBIs. Smith has now played in 266 games in his major league career and he is 175 of 613 (.285 avg, .871 OPS) with 107 runs scored, 29 homers and 101 RBIs. Seth Smith has been a big time player for the Rockies despite not playing every day and that will likely continue at least the rest of this year do to the glut of outfielders on the Rockies’ roster.

Blogged under General, Front Page, Injuries, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Saturday 19 June 2010 at 8:46 pm

The Rockies have lost 25-year old righty swinging shortstop Troy Tulowitzki for the next 6-8 weeks due to a broken left wrist. Tulowitzki has played in 62 games for the Rockies this season and he is 72 of 235 (.306 avg, .877 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 9 homers, 34 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Clint Barmes will slide over from 2B to replace Tulo at SS. Barmes has played in 59 games for the Rockies this year and he is 43 of 192 (.224 avg, .650 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 4 homers and 31 RBIs. Barmes is a good defensive SS but the Rockies will miss Tulowitzki’s bat as Jonathan Herrera will be taking over at 2B for now. Herrera has played in 11 games for the Rockies so far this season and he is 3 for 23 (.130 avg, .297 OPS) with 2 runs scored. The Rockies might need to look outside the organization for a 2B or SS if Herrera isn’t up to the challenge.
