The Rockies have acquired 28-year old righty reliever Manny Delcarmen from the Red Sox for 21-year old lefty starting pitcher Chris Balcolm-Miller. Delcarmen has pitched in 48 games (0 starts) this year for the Red Sox and he was 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. He has now pitched in 289 games (0 starts) in his six years in the majors and he is 11-6 with 3 saves, a 3.89 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. Balcolm-Smith started 19 games in A-ball for the Rockies this year and he was 6-7 with a 3.31 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. I think the Rockies could have probably gotten a better pitcher for a prospect like Balcolm-Smith.

The Rockies have placed starting 3B Ian Stewart on the 15-day disabled list with a strained rib cage. Stewart has played in 115 games for the Rockies this year and he is 98 of 371 (.264 avg, .801 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 18 homers, 60 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. The Rockies are looking as we speak to make a deal for a player to replace Stewart until he’s ready to return to action.

The Rockies have signed 32-year old righty reliever Luis Ayala to a minor league deal. Ayala has pitched in 33 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year and he is 2-9 with 4 saves, a 6.43 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. He has pitched in 377 games in his major league career and he is 29-39 with 18 saves, a 3.67 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. This was a very nice low risk signing for the Rockies as Ayala could help them down the stretch as he has had some success in his major league career.

Jason Hammel is consistent for the Colorado Rockies

27-year old righty starting pitcher Jason Hammel is a solid back end of the rotation starter for the Rockies. He has started 23 games for the Rockies this year and he is 8-7 with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. He is second on the team in wins, starts and innings pitched so far this year. Hammel has now pitched in 57 games (53 starts) in his two years with the Rockies and he is 18-15 with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Not too many people out there thought much about the trade that brought him over from the Rays last season but it has really helped out the Rockies and Hammel. Hammel would be nothing more than a mop up man if he were still with the Rays.
