The Rockies have placed starting shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the 15-day disabled list with a right hand laceration. He injured his hand by slamming his bat on the ground in anger after a poor at bat. Tulowitzki’s 2008 season has been a nightmare as he has played in 39 games for the Rockies this season and he is 25 for 151 (.166 avg, .544 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 3 homers and 16 RBIs. This will cause a domino effect in the Rockies’ infield as Clint Barmes will take over at shortstop with Jeff Baker moving to 2B and rookie Joe Koshansky starting at 1B. Barmes has played in 47 games for the Rockies this season and he is 54 for 160 (.338 avg, .926 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 5 homers, 22 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.

The Colorado Rockies place Jeff Francis on the D.L.

The Colorado Rockies have placed lefty starting pitcher Jeff Francis on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation. Even though Francis wasn’t pitching well this is a pretty big blow to the Rockies’ pitching staff. Francis has started 17 games this season for the Rockies and he is 3-7 with a 5.67 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP. The Rockies have recalled veteran lefty Mark Redman from AAA to replace Francis in the rotation. Redman pitched in 7 games (6 starts) earlier in the season for the Rockies and he was 2-3 with a 7.84 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP. Redman did pitch better in AAA so maybe there is a ray of hope with him. He started 9 games in AAA ball and he was 5-2 with a 4.64 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. If Redman doesn’t pitch better this time around the Rockies could be in deep trouble.

The Rockies continue to have big injury problems as Matt Holliday has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained hamstring. Holliday has played in 46 games this season for the Rockies and he is 60 for 187 (.321 avg, .952 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 8 homers, 26 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Holliday will be replaced on the roster by 28-year old lefty swinging outfielder Cory Sullivan. Sullivan has played in 39 games in AAA ball this season and he is 45 for 158 (.285 avg, .777 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 3 homers, 18 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Sullivan has played in 337 games in his major league career and he is 254 for 904 (.281 avg, .725 OPS) with 130 runs scored, 8 homers, 74 RBIs and 24 stolen bases. Even though Sullivan is a decent player the Rockies will miss Holliday’s bat big time as the injuries are really starting to mount on them.
