The Rockies have signed 30-year old lefty reliever Tyler Johnson to a minor league deal. Johnson last pitched in the majors way back in 2007 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Johnson has pitched in 116 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 3-5 with a 4.32 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Johnson has only given up 67 hits and he has whiffed 65 batters in his first 77 innings in the majors, so he had good stuff. But, he also walked 42 batters. Johnson will need to tighten up his control if he’s going to get back to the majors with the Rockies.

26-year old righty swinging outfielder Matt McBride is ripping the ball in AAA so far this year. He has played in 33 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 46 for 128 (.359 avg, .920 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 4 homers and 22 RBIs. McBride has only walked 4 times this season, so he’s swinging at everything, yet he’s hitting the ball well. McBride has now played in 595 games in his first seven years in the minors and he is 639 for 2,236 (.286 avg, .815 OPS) with 334 runs scored, 73 homers, 373 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. McBride could get his first shot at the show in 2012 if he keeps raking in AAA.

Moyer has given up 46 hits (5 homers) in only 33 2/3 innings this year, but he has only walked 10 batters and whiffed 17….which has limited the damage a little bit. Moyer has now pitched in 692 games (634 starts) in his first 25 years in the majors and he is 268-206 with a 4.23 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. If Moyer is going to have a legit shot at 300 wins in his career, the Rockies are going to have to start scoring more runs when he pitches.

The Rockies have sent 24-year old righty starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin to AAA. He has started 5 games for the Rockies this year and he is 0-3 with a 7.30 ERA and a 1.87 WHIP. Chacin gave up 31 hits (7 homers) and he walked 15 batters in his first 24 2/3 innings while whiffing 22 batters, and those are not good numbers as opposing hitters were running up to the plate with him on the mound. Chacin has now pitched in 73 games (58 starts) in his first four years with the Rockies and he is 20-29 with a 3.78 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. The Rockies will likely call up Chacin quickly if he gets his act back together in AAA.

UPDATE: (5/7/2012) - The Rockies rescinded Jhoulys Chacin’s demotion to AAA and they have placed him on the 15-day disabled list instead due to right shoulder inflammation.

The Rockies have placed 33-year old righty starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie on the 15-day disabled list due to a sprained right shouder which happened in a bicycle accident. Guthrie has pitched in 4 games (all starts) for the Rockies this year and he is 2-1 with a 5.92 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. The Rockies have called up 28-year old righty starting pitcher Guillermo Moscoso to replace Guthrie in the rotation. Moscoso has pitched in 4 games (all starts) in AAA-ball so far this year and he was 1-3 with a 7.91 ERA and a 2.02 WHIP. But, Moscoso has pitched in 34 games (21 starts) so far in his major league career and he is 8-10 with a 3.47 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. I have a feeling that Moscoso is going to do a decent job for the Rockies.
